Nathaniel's Story

Nathaniel* was part of a very large biological family group that was in and out of foster care multiple times. He endured one traumatic experience after another, including homelessness, frequently changing schools, and even being stabbed by an older brother. By the time he was placed in a stable home, most of his siblings had already been adopted by other families or placed in residential facilities.
Nathaniel struggled with feelings of worthlessness and believed he had no place to belong. Then another tragedy struck when his biological father was murdered during a gang event. His goodbye visit took place at the hospital, as his dad was passing. Nathaniel was only nine years old.
When his adoptive mother heard about Youth Haven, she reached out to see if we could help him. From his very first stay with us, Nathaniel recognized that our staff loved him and genuinely cared about the hurtful things he had experienced. He felt safe and knew his needs would be met. He was able to relax and have fun with other kids who understood him, because they had gone through hardships of their own. For the first time in his life, he felt like he belonged.
Most importantly, Nathaniel learned that God loves him, has never abandoned him, and has a plan for his life. He made a decision to follow Jesus, and he is healing and growing as he continues to engage with our on-site adventures and Adventure Club mail and online program.
Because friends like you gave, Nathaniel found a place to belong and discovered the healing love of Jesus. Thank you for impacting his life!
